What kind of storage box in truck bed?
Boss says with the b-day coming up, she wants to get me a storage box for truck bed right behind cab. I would use it for tools, jumper cables, tow chains etc. and other necessities that I would no longer have to keep in the back seat area of my truck. Did a search, but only a few comments here and there. So.....I really don't know what'll work towing the Monty. What do you use? Is it the saddle-bag type that lays on the top edge of your bed? If so, is there enough clearance for the 5th wheel to turn safely? Or do you use the recessed type only? What works for you? Thanks for your input. D

I bought a full width 19" high 30" deep locking box (my garage). I am sorry I got it now, because I am restricted to a soft snap down tonneau cover instead of the roll up that I want. If I did it again I would go like Jay Bird did and get the Transferflow fuel tank and their Pace Arrow (I think) roll up tonneau.
I have a small 10" high box behind the hitch so the 5th hitch clears.
edit - I run only flush or recessed below the bed rail boxes. Also I pay close attention to inside bed rail clearance between them and the back edge of the trailer hitch when on a 90 degree turn.

I have an aluminum box that sits on bed floor. It does not reach the top of the bed rails. It is large and I store alot of things in it. Cannot be hit by 5er. Lots more storage than saddle bag type. Yet I am considering a fuel tank tool box combo to replace it.

I have a low profile, full width box. The bottom of the lid is flush with the sides and is less than 2" tall. It is diamond plate aluminum.

I have a Pro Tech that has a diamond plate top and smooth aluminum body. It is 24" wide and 60" long and is right below bed level so doesn't block view. Has a sloping top with one handle on the side for opening. Has a sliding tray inside and is not flimsy like some of thecheaper ones.

I use a home-made box that I’ve had ever since I towed with a full sized van. Not pretty but very handy. I use a folding cover and it sits below the top. When the top is opened and folded against the cab it covers the box.

So does anyone have one that rests on the top edge of the bed? I'm concerned about about the clearance for the 5th wheel. So far sounds like the above are recessed.

dino I have a low profile box that rests on the rails. It is about the same hight as the ss round rails on the truck about 2.5" above the rail no problems at all clearing the camper. if you look close you can see it in my avatar. it is also deep.

Great Bobby, I see yours.....I'm really trying to make a sound decision and make the best use of space. Yours is what I'd prefer. I saw on the net that they make them low profile. D

Have a Alum Delta Chest type, from Tractor Supply, sets below the rails and runs from side to side. Punched a hole in each back corner and used "J" bolts to hook into the tie down loops in the front bottom of the of the bed, so it's not going anywhere. Holds my two Hondas, extra 20 lb propane tank, extra water hose, 30 and 50 amp extension cords, jumper cables and a few other misc items. When unhooked, unroll Toneau cover any you don't know it's there.

This may not be what you are looking for, but it works for me. I considered a toolbox, both above the rail and recessed, but did not want to give up the bed space all the time. I just bought a 39" W x 20"L x 30" deep plastic tub at Wal Mart. It has wheels and a locking lid. I roll it back to my wood pile, toss in some wood, throw in some tools, jumper cables, whatever. It stay in my bed while we camp, keeping things dry and secure. When we get home, I take it out. Works for me.

I use 2 tool boxes. I have one in the front of the bed that comes up to the top of the bed rails. In this box, I can put 2 Honda gens. and 6 gal. of extra gas, plus all of gen. equipment. Then in the rear of the box of the truck, I have a lower level box that is half as high as the box in the front. Both are full width. I purchased these at alum-line.com I had the back one made the way I wanted it for storage of tools and power cords. They do have a standard model, which is a little different than mine. If you go to their website, they show you what they have. These are Alum deck plate and are a little expensive. They make them here in the town I live in, Cresco, Iowa. Alum. trailer capital of the world. Alum-Lite and Featherlite (NASCAR)Trailers.....JB

Here is the website. I screwed up on the last posting and put a dash in it..... alumline.com Then go to Boxes in the left of page, then top lid boxes, then RV boxes. Or look at this..
