Dexter self-adjusting electric brakes
I have a 2015 3610rl with Dexter electric brakes. I have noticed that the trailer braking power has diminished over the 4 yrs of travel I have put on it. I decided to inspect the brakes and repack the wheel bearings this winter before I hit the road this spring. The bearings were fine, and the brakes were not worn badly, but I noticed that the brake self adjusters were not working at all. There is a cable/lever system that advances the star wheel on the adjuster as the brake shoes wear. At least, that's how it's supposed to work. The star wheel has a ratchet like shape where the lever can move over the star in one direction, but not the other. My star wheels move so freely that they just go back and forth with the lever and never advance. Has anyone else seen this problem and resolved it?
I spoke with 4 people at Dexter today and although they were very nice, they were no help!
Sorry for the rambling.
Andy

I apologize in advance for not directly answering your question but the best way to repair the electric brakes is to replace them with disc brakes. You will never regret it.

I have those on our Wildcat 5er and two other trailers. They have worked perfect on the Wildcat for 9 years but I always have to manually adjust them on the other two trailers. Just be careful to not over-tighten as its difficult to back them off. I simply adjust until I feel/hear a slight drag and stop.

I would have an experienced mechanic look at that. These brakes have been around forever and everyone sells replacement parts which is a good thing on the road. When in proper adjustment I can skid the trailer if I want to.

Did you inspect the magnets on each wheel?? If they are worn, nothing else will work properly.

Update: Got a call out of the blue from the engineer I had spoken to at Dexter the other day. We discussed the issue some more and he asked when I bought the unit to see if they could help with maybe warranty replacement of the brakes. I didn't have very high hopes as I picked up the Montana in May, 2015. He called several hours later and said that although my unit was out of warranty, that they were going to replace whatever was needed as a good will gesture, and to expect a call from their warranty dept. Bottom line is, I now have 4 new adjuster kits on the way. Refreshing response to have a company stand up for their products.

It has been said many times before, but one more time, this is why it is a good idea to pull the drums annually to inspect the brakes and repack the bearings. You have no idea what is happening inside the drum until it is off.

I agree you never know until you pull the drums. I switched over the hydraulic disk brakes on my 2017 montana and one of the brakes had already come apart when we pulled the drum. Love the disc brakes. Took myself and another mechanic about 4 hours total to do the switch. Not bad at all.
