Washer/Dryer
I have a question and need some help. Where does the drain for the washer go to? Does it go into the gray or into the black? The dealer who installed said it goes into the black. I have a 06, 3400rl. I am told that I need to have the black valve open when doing laundry. Does anyone else do this? Thanks

Ours goes into the gray, other folks have reported it going into the black. You will need to verify where yours goes. The drain needs to be open or you get over full.

Wellll,
I had Two stickers in my compartment, one said it goes into the Black, one said it goes into the main drain after the tanks, I guess they want to cover all bases!
My '07 3400Rl actually goes into the main line after the tanks.

Our 2003 it went into the gray. On this one it goes direct to the dump pipe. I can see the drain line under the rig, plumbed into the dump pipe. If yours goes into either the gray or the black and you start with an empty tank you can get a load or two of water into that tank. You could start a load, wait until it is draining, then open one valve at a time. If it goes direct you'll see it draining into the sewer hose with all valves closed. I use a clear connector so I can see when dumping is done. If you don't have a clear connector you can feel the vibration in the sewer hose when the water is draining, assuming there's a significant volume of water.
We were at the factory when ours was on order and I was concerned enough I asked about this. They said for awhile they drained into the black tank but they stopped that midway through 2005. So there may be some 2006 models draining to the black tank and others direct.

sreigle pretty well sumed it up. We have a 2005 3475 (same body as the 3400) and our washer/dryer drain goes into the black tank. You can check to see if yours was moved to the open drain by opening the black tank (empty) and follow steves instructions. Since ours was directed to the black tank, We drain the black tank and then close the valve. We then drain our black tank and after a wash, The soap rinses out the tank somewhat with the soap loosing up any solids that were left over. It should have cleaned the signal nodes that tell you the tank is full or not, but it doesn't.(retired Army)

Thank goodness on our 2005 3400 it goes into the gray. I can see the reasoning though since the washer is close to the toilet in the 3400. It is the same reasoning that has the bathroom sink going into the black on ours. However, it does mean dumping before you are full so I'm glad ours goes to the gray. We do leave the gray open while doing laundry as I usually do a couple of loads at a time.

Mine goes to the grey tank. I can wash two loads of clothes without opening the valves if my tank starts out on 1/4 to 1/2 without overfilling the grey tank. It works very well if I need to dump the black water the same day. Otherwise I open the valve after the first load. I'm just happy mine doesn't drain into the black tank which I usually don't dump but once a month.

Our built in April of 06 3400 does not drain into the black tank nor does the bathroom sink look under the camper and you should see a pipe going directly to the dump gate.....or maybe not?????

This got me thinking... I don't recall seeing any plumbing for my 3400 either. We are like you... "Prepped".

We found out the hard way that ours goes into the black tank when the toliet backed up and water started coming out of the bottom of the trailer. Thank goodness, you dealer told you. No one bothered to tell us and of course it was not in the manual. We were told we could have it changed but elected not to. It just means that you have to open the black tank when you wash instead of the gray.

We had a lengthy discussion on this very issue last spring. We also wondered where our washer drained. There is a label behind ours that says it drains into the black tank. We had the belly off because we had a leak in the grey tank (tank replaced by Keystone at no charge). Karen had the washer on and I went underneath when it started to drain and found out that our washer drains into the grey tank. So sometimes the stickers don't tell the truth. The best way would be to follow Steve's advice about running a load then checking where it drains from.

Thanks for the info. Opening the black before wash is not a problem....just a small inconvience. I was not aware of the sink draining into the black and will now have to check that out.

Since yours is a 2006 it probably drains into the gray because your toilet is probably facing different than ours. I think that is why they put the sink with the black, they are right next to each other on our unit. The later 2005's had the toilet facing towards the bedroom and that puts the toilet drain away from the bathroom sink. It also gives you more unobstructed room in the basement which is probably why they changed it.

Sue, it would be great if we could find out for sure that one could tell where the sink drains to by looking at the toilet orientation. Then we could answer that question on this forum more easily. Maybe we need to ask Keystone about this.

Is there a way to get the plumbing diagram for the specific models? This would help with some of these issues. Anyone from Keystone reading this and could answer?
