Unhitching question
Picked up our new 3121rl last Saturday. We have a ram 3500 short box. We had a pullrite slider hitch installed. It hit he’s fine but had a really hard time unhitching. Today I could not get It unhitched. After a couple of hours i called the dealership. They sent a technician out. The capture plate was bent. When truck and trailer is on flat ground it hitches and unhitched like a dream. When I put into my storage building the front wheels of my truck is dropped about 2 inches from my rear. I left the rig just enough to take the weight off the truck. I am having a heck of a time unlatching the hitch. Hope someone can give me some advice. Thanks

Have had pullrite hitches for the whole 8 years we've full timed. There has only been once or twice when it would unhook once I lifted the king pin up enough. I always have to get in the truck and let it roll back an inch or so and then it will unhitch.

That is our routine also, lift some weight with the landing jacks, get back in the truck and back into the hitch a bit, then get back out to pull the bar, then back in the truck to pull it clear of the rig. The only times we don’t do this dance is when we might have to back the rig into a spot and the pressure is off the hitch locking mechanism.

i am also new to this and have a pullrite slider also. I recently called pullrite to ask about a "bed saver" made by a competitor. discussing the same situation i asked about unlatching, told him I lower front legs and then have to back up a bit to get the handle released. I was told that this is the correct way to unhook .

Same for me. I try to lift the pin box so a little gap is between the hitch plate and the hitch - most of the time just on the front or back edge and still resting on the rest of the hitch. Sometimes I have to back up a bit also before there is separation.

That is a basic characteristic of the wrap around jaw locking mechanism. If the pin is putting pressure backward on the jaw, that jaw can’t rotate to unwrap. Backing slightly to take that pressure off the jaw is the key to easy release.
And IMHO the wrap around jaw is the most secure latch mechanism.

I have found that after getting the trailer weight off the truck that I step back in the truck, put it in Neutral. The pressure on the hitch moves the truck slightly. Step out and easily release the wrap around jaws on the hitch. Then pull the truck away from the trailer.

also if you get in a situation where the truck is turned, just unpin the head and jack the trailer up.
