Lots of potential areas of failure. Some that have been posted over the years.
- Bad inside switch or 12 v fuse blown
- Bad switch mounted outside on the water heater itself (if yours has one. some newer models don't)
- Tripped 120 vac circuit breaker
- Bad heating element
- Bad thermostat/hi temp cutout
- Tripped hi/temp cutout (try pushing the reset button)
- Bad interposing relay (there is a 12 volt relay mounted to the water heater operated by the inside switch that sends 120 vac to the heating element
- Burned wiring (has occurred at the outside switch, thermostat/hi temp cutout, interposing relay,, ....)
- Some newer rigs have inline wire splices connecting the water heater wiring to the trailer wiring. These splices have a bad reputation for overheating anywhere they are used.
- Water heater not plugged in (someone posted that their water heater had a regular power cord and it had not been plugged into the outlet behind the water heater)
Using a voltmeter is the best way to find where the voltage is and where it isn't to determine the problem. Arbitrarily replacing parts and hoping that was is not the best approach.
