Ham Radio Testing

If you are like me, the Morse Code requirement was a block for me even considering getting my Ham license. Well, they no longer have a Morse Code requirement. At the Fall Rally last year, free testing was given and many of us got our Ham Radio licenses. And, as a bonus, GigaParts (a Ham Radio store) offers a deal for $21.99 that provides a radio, programming software and cable). Programming just means you can input frequencies via a computer instead of keying in a bunch of numbers with buttons.

Why would I want a Ham license? Well, Ham radio works even where there is no cell signal. It also works when the power is out. In most communities, the Ham radio is a key part of emergency management. Also, ham radios have greater range than FRMS and CB. There are lots of facets to Ham radio. Did you know you can talk to the ISS as a technician class operator with a handheld radio?

The Volunteer Examiner Team that did the testing at Fall Rally will be at CPRR this year. If you are interested, just let Jim or Lisa Santore know and we will find a time to do the testing. There are three license levels - technician, general and extra class. The tech and general tests are 35 questions and require a minimum 74% grade to get your license. The extra is 50 questions and for me, much more difficult. You can take all three tests back to back, but you must pass the tech before taking the general and then pass general to take the extra. Each class of license grants more frequency privileges.

Once you pass the test, the FCC charges $35 for a 10 year license. If you get your tech and later pass your general, there is no charge to upgrade your license. It is encouraged to get your tech and general if you plan to go beyond the basic handheld radios.

So, what do I need to study? On Amazon, you can find books for each test. The ARRL guides are what I used. Also, YouTube is your friend. It’s an easy way to check out what’s involved before you buy a book. Hope some of you decide to get your license.
