Any port...

We managed a uneventful trip from Northern Virginia to Mobil, AL, and our luck held most of the way back. But, the weather closed in ahead of us as we were trying to make it to Wythville, VA for our last night on the road. Jo, the copilot, called ahead and was told that there was already 6" of snow on the ground and it was still snowing hard. "Stay put", was their advice. Well, we were approaching Chilhowie, VA and saw "Interstate Campground" listed in the AAA book. We called, they had space, and we stayed for three nights to let the storm pass and the roads clear. IC is a tiny campground, part of which is tken up with senior housing units, and it is managed by the nicest people. Full hookups are available, and the rate is reasonable. On our second morning there, Jo was out with the dogs and met a fellow RV'er who had just come in from Nova Scotia on his way to AZ. His description of the road conditions to the north was, "Pretty rough..." Since he had just towed through the worst day of the storm, we had to believe him. On our trip back to Leesburg, VA, we passed a half dozen of so tractor-trailer accidents, and understand there was one fatality. So, winter travel can be great - or it can be otherwise. Our new motto is, "Be patient, and have an alternate plan". PS: Along I-81 are signs with the cell phone number for highway conditions. This service proved very useful.
