When ours is stored for long time, I clean out, really clean, then, DRY, very DRY. Then, I stuff freezer and frig with crumpled newspaper, shut door, click it shut.
This method has proven totally successful time and time again. Only time I had any problem was when the unit was not TOTALLY dry inside before I shut the doors.
I use this for all coolers too, and, it sure works!
