They do make awning shade end pieces that you connect to the outer edge or roller of the awning and place a hook on the unit at the door side. This does stop some of the rain from coming in and it also shades the door from that gap between the slide and the door itself. I'm sure if you could cut a light weight tarp to fit that same space it would protect one from the rains. The only problem is that the awning would have to be out to connect this. If you have any wind what so ever from the rain storm, you stand the chance of the awning being blown up and over from the winds.
