I would suspect the bleeder plug o-ring. Seems with the new ultra low diesel the o-ring is failing quite frequently. Scary to think how many other o-rings might eventually be effected. I have seen talk of going to a viton o-ring on the bleeder. My son has been having the intermittent engine stalls also and traced it to the bleeder. You might try to continue pumping the primer, and watching for leakage with the bleeder closed.
