Aluminum alloy wheels corrode. Especially if they are exposed to road salt or are chrome plated.
If your trusted tire shop knows what they are doing (or subcontracted to a wheel repair shop) you should be fine. I used to own a wheel repair shop (until I sold it and retired). I've personally successfully repaired thousands of corroded wheels.
