I installed a piece of window screen under the vents. This prevents objects from dropping down into the heat duct. It also allows me to use our vacuum cleaner with a narrow slot fitting to fit down to the heat vents and clean them out. I too have removed the vents several times in over seven years of full timing and the screws still hold tight. If they did become stripped out I would use the old "toothpick and Elmer's glue" trick.
