Only drawback I've found is that I don't believe I can connect to a 30 amp circuit when that's all that's available. But I've found a cure for that. I've got a spltter cord that will allow me to plug into two 30 amp circuits or one 30 amp and one 20 amp circuit to get my required 50 amp circuit. This splitter wasn't cheap ($75) but it works great!

You can use the 50 amp surge protector (either brand) on a 30 amp circuit. Just use a 50 to 30 amp adapter
As for the 30/20 amp connecter you should do a Search on them here. Besides not providing 50 amp power, they have other potential issues.
