There's a remote possibility you didn't get the rear seal all the way over the seal step on the spindle when you put the wheel back on last year. The seal only goes over that step about 1/4" +/-. If that was so and you followed up by tightening the nut "wrist tight" like many of us do ... it would have felt OK at the time if you didn't yank back and forth on the wheel. The steel nut retainer that has long replaced a cotter key actually makes a pretty positive hold on the nut unless one just bends the locking arms way out taking them off wrong. Being similar to spring steel, they generally just pop off with little effort from a screwdriver. What did the grease seal look like?
