Gel Coat or not a person SHOULD wax the unit once a year. Just because you have a Gel Coat you still need to wax it. It will protect the surface from sun and other things that are in the air and help in removing the bugs on the cap. I do not know what is the best wax as that is a matter of choice but wax is better then no wax.
