I would stay away from Toronto if I were you, too much traffic. We live in Eastern Ontario and we take I-90 across to Goshen. If I were you, I would take Autoroute 20, then 30 to avoid Montreal, then 20 to the 401. You can cross at either the Thousand Islands bridge or the Ogdensburg bridge. We cross at Ogdensburg because there is less waiting at the border and the guards are nicer.

From Ogdensburg you follow 37 to I-81, then south to I-90.

Another reason to avoid the Toronto route is that the roads in Michigan are notoriously bad.
