I've driven 101 from San Francisco to Gold Beach, Oregon this summer, and have driven that route many times both with a 33 foot motorhome towing car and with our 33 foot Montana. Just spent the summer at Eureka, CA. 101 goes right through town.

For the most part, it is a 4 lane highway although there are a number of 2 lane sections including through the redwoods. Little tight, but very do-able, just take your time and be careful. Big rigs use it all of the time along with many lumber trucks. It's the only access road to the Northern California coast.

IMHO, it would be the best route for you because going down 5 to 505 to 80 would be a much longer ride.
