I too have a 2012 with the remote and I would not be without it. Changing the battery does not affect the communication link. I had to replace my remote a while ago (stolen with truck) and it had to be paired. I seem to recall the instructions are printed on the control module which is mounted on the back wall of the front compartment (aka Garage).
