In NY State you pay on your out of pocket costs. If new, it's at least 7% of the actual selling price. If it's a trade, it's still 7% but only on the difference between the trade allowed and the final cost. If you paid $25,000 out of pocket, got a $25,000 trade, your NY tax bill in my county would be a one time $1750 tax. Other counties could be more. My yearly registration, 1 Jan - 31 Dec is $167.75 but pro rated. I usually renew about 1 May unless we take an early trip. I pay about $120 for the year's remaining 8 months. While many NY taxes can be ridiculously high, vehicle registration seems to be fairly equitable vs some states.
