From what I've seen it doesn't affect the payload because they also have a higher GVWR (not lower) than the competition. Or did in 2005 when I bought an F250, anyhow. GVWR on that truck was 10,000. By comparison, my 2007 Dodge megacab SRW 3500 has GVWR of 10,100. Just 100 pounds more than that heavy Ford 3/4 ton. GCWR on the Ford was 23,000. On my 3500 it's 21,000. Tow rating was also higher on the 3/4 ton Ford than on my Dodge. Payload is where the difference is. The Ford payload was 21xx, right about the norm for a 3/4 ton. On the Dodge 1-ton it's 2577 (it's SRW). (Somebody tell me again that going from 3/4 ton to 1 ton is a big step up. Nomenclature doesn't as much today as it used to.)

By the way, that F250 with full tank and both of us onboard is with 20 lbs of what this Dodge weighs with the same load. Both were shortbed, SRW, crew-cab, diesel, automatic.
