If the screen is too restrictive, then it could cause the heater to malfunction. From the threads I've read here before, and my own experience, nobody has had a problem leaving the screens on. I don't know the brand of my screen, but it's about the size and shape of half a tennis ball, maybe a little bigger, and is held on with a spring.
