Have you tried relieving the friction point of the hinge by drilling the dimple in the hinge joint? A small 1/8" bit drilled through the first layer of the knuckle joint, removing the peened/dimpled area of the hinge. Try doing one and seeing if the reduction in tension is acceptable before doing the second. You've got nothing to lose if you are planning on ultimately replacing the hinge anyway. You'll also be wise to install a door holder on the exterior to prevent wind from slamming the door closed if there is not one there currently.
