There are two screws that hold the sheet of plywood in place. The piece can then be pulled up at the foot of the bed and slid out. I made one cut with a table saw to divide the sheet in half, then drilled two 7/8" holes in each piece at the center of both edges for finger pulls (instead of screwing handles on them) so they can slide flat onto each other, either way, for access to the space underneath. The space is not super usable, but good for some stuff that you don't use much, and you need to be careful where you put things so as not to interfere with the slide operation. You should run the slide in and out a few times with the boards removed and the bed lifted up, so you can see what is moving and where you should not put stuff.
