Your average run of the mill civilian has no clue as to how hazardous the military is even in peacetime or when stationed stateside. Nearly everything we do is dangerous in some way...weapons, helicopter operations, live fire exercises...and all at night.
On edit...I flew a CH 47 (Chinook) in VN with a warrant officer who used to say we should not be flying at night, that night air "had no lift."
