That may well work. But I think you will find that EMT is not nearly as strong as the JT tubes are. Using a screw tighting method like the JTs will likely deform the EMT possibly making them difficult to extend and retract. Also the attachment brackets will be a chore to make. But you may have the talent and equipment to tackle that.
