we been hit 3 times up in the PA mountains by those nasty diamond backs but we always wore those high top LL bean snake boots. Never went to the wood pile or the outhouse without my trusty 45.

I never had any trouble carrying a 45 concealed (especially the smaller ones like the Colt Defender), but the Highway Patrolman you speak of, even in a 4" barrel is too bulky do to it's frame size and the fact it was a 6 shot revolver.
