Any reviews on: Winegard GM-MP1 Carryout Portable?

Hi Forum,

Our new-for-us 2005 Montana 3400RL has no Satellite system. We’ve had a lot of startup costs and are not ready to invest in a $1,800+ HD Satellite system just yet. (Maybe in Quartzsite next January.)

In the meantime, we are considering the Winegard GM-MP1 Carryout Portable Satellite system for about $160 and using it with DirecTV, even though it will just be SD and not HD.

Here it is at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...xtlevelserv-20

Has anyone tried the Winegard GM-MP1 Carryout Portable Satellite and will it serve our purposes?

Amazon and Good Sam both have it for around $160, but perhaps buying through Winegard is the smarter option? At http://www.winegard.com/portable-sat...te-antenna.php they are advertising it for $199 with $150 off if you sign up for DirecTV through them.

After we get the better HD system, we’re thinking this GM-MP1 might be a good backup when the roof-mounted system isn’t optimal.

As far as a DVR for the system, DirecTV says they do not have any DVRs for SD and that I will need to pay $15 per month for an HD DVR that can pick up SD. Is this acceptable, or should I be trying to buy a used SD DVR from somewhere?

Regarding entertainment packages:

DirecTV seems to be pretty inexpensive as far as $40 per month for their “Choice” package with free NFL Sunday Ticket the first year, and it gives Network affiliate channels so you don’t have to depend on your Antenna to pick up local. (Dish has no Network Affiliates right now I am hearing.)

We tried streaming HBO-GO on our Roku on the last day of the month for our Internet when we had some bandwidth to burn, and discovered that 1 hour of HBO-Go used 1.5 GB! At $4.5 per GB through the Millenicom.com Hotspot plan, streaming is not a low-cost option - even though it works rather well. Better to rent a Redbox movie at $1.20 per night and then get the DVD extras on it.

Thanks to all for your input on my other inquiries.

Brett
