I remember these same comments made 20-30 years ago about what we would do if gas/diesel went to $2 a gallon, the $3, then $4 and now now $5, I think many if not most of us will adapt like we have in the past.
At home in our town, gas is around $4.82 US gallon and diesel is right around the same price as per Gasbuddy.
I also think the number 5 has a mental catch to it, I remember back in the late 60's/early 70's reading an article in Motor Trend or another automotive guide reviewing a fully loaded Chevrolet Caprice Classic and the caption was "Is a Chevrolet worth $5,000?"
