I traded my '56 Chevy 6 cyl beater for a pristine '58 with a 283. We had priveleges in the base auto hobby shop and a friend of mind helped me rebuild it. We pulled the engine and took it to a speed shop and they bored it to 301, bluprinted, full race cam, Holly 850, and a Hurst shifter. It would outrun any 348 around and all the 327's also, although it was a much heavier car. I did have to put a splatter shield over the tranny as my friend thought I was going to blow it up. Cathy was a WAF at the time and I let her drive it to her barracks. When she parked it she forgot to set the emergency brake and it rolled across a street and into a field, luckily no damage. I gave her some OJT on using the emergency brake. A couple months later she had it down pat, so I married her, been together since. That was 1969. The only real muscle car I owned.....Would love to get another and finish my childhood.......
