Going from Colorado Springs via US-50, over Monarch Pass is a pretty good way. On the inside all the way up the pass going west, no guardrails on the east bound side. We avoid interstates, especially I25 and I70 due to construction.
We have stopped at the KOA west of Salida, just before the pass, only because we like the town. Not half way time-wise to Telluride though.
The
Tomichi Creek Trading Post just over Monarch has some RV sites too.
Have also looked at the KOA in Gunnison (nicer park I think), but a little pricey.
If you can snag a site a Cheyenne Mountain State Park, book as early as you can. Turn right out of the park heading south on CO-115 takes you to US-50.
When we went to the Bluegrass Festival in Telluride, we camped in the Matterhorn Campground and used the free gondola from the resort to go into town. Not sure how many long sites are there and it closes early to mid September.
I would be happy to try and answer any questions you might have.
