Below that vinyl flooring is the wood floor, probably chip board. The soft spot should be taken out by first removing the vinyl...to be sure that all the damaged wood is removed. Once cut out, one can glue and screw one by four on all four sides of the hole so that you have a shelf for the new plywood to rest one...need I say this is glued and screwed to that hardwood you installed.
