Someone from the office asked me right before I left, How do you know when you have enough money so you can retire? How do you plan for that.

It took no thought at all to fire back an answer. The answer is: You never have "enough" money." You just do it, and make it work.

I did advise him to pay off ALL his debt before retiring. If you have no debt, you can actually live pretty cheap (if 'cheap" is a valid word any more these days.

However, if you have debt, then you need to make sure you have enough income coming in somewhere to cover your debt. So, if you plan for retirement, get yourself out of debt first and then stay out of debt. If you do that first, you can function off a lot less income and live happy and successful.
