Tom my experience has been that it softens the ride. The air bag and shock asorber which is part of the knuckle mechanism flexes as you are going down the road asorbing the shock of bridge expansion joints and bumps in the road. When I first got our 5vr on a trip to Florida from Indiana my back was killing me on arrival. I installed the TrailAir pin box and haven't complained since. What is interesting is while going down the road you can see the pin box mechanism working up and down but you do not feel that sudden shock in the back end of the truck.
