I see absolutely no reason to latch it anyway, with the single exception that on windy nights, if flaps noisily in the wind all night while I am sleeping. Traveling down the road, who cares? Nothing is getting in there while driving.
I just leave it unlatched all the time and it closes just fine when the fan isn't running. Again, I will latch it on windy nights.
