Bill, so sorry to hear that. Sounds like the Surgeguard was mis-wired internally, check the fuses in the converter, it should be protected. The mfg. will be eager to get that back to do testing, I bet they will stand behind your damages.
I would pull the line voltage breaker assembly and check all the wires and breakers for damage as well.
