Hi John, I had my carrier bearing go on my truck...had to convince the mechanic that it was bad. Symptom was I could feel the vibration at a certain speed and felt it in my butt, not sensitive to turning gyro pressures nor braking application, just purely a speed point harmonic...some temperature influence tho as warmer days made it non-existant.
If u-joints the test is typically to switch between forward or reverse and attempt to "feel" for a thump in the undercarriage as you flop the driveline back and forth. Its a bit tricky to determine normal gear lash from failing u-joints and can be subjective but training yourself to do this is possible. Good luck.
