I live in Minnesota and I leave my block heater plugged in all the time from about 25 degrees down. As far as diesel additive 911 is for emergency use for gelled fuel. If you do not want to to add additives manually all the time you can buy #1 diesel fuel it will cost more but will run better and also help the engine start on cold mornings. You might need to go to a truck stop to find the fuel
