Use a soft brush to clean it once you have it removed. Once it's clean, if you never want to do that again, use a screen in the shower. We buy them in sets from Amazon and then we take the screw out and remove the cover that's over the drain and use the screen from then on. You won't believe how often and how much you have to clean out of the screen, but going on 10 years of full timing since I discovered that and never have had a Hepvo valve out again.
