You don't say what type of hitch you have. I have a Pullrite super glide. They recommend cleaning with brake fluid, then a light sanding. i use slip plate witch is a dry graphite spray. It doesn't pickup dirt and stays clean. I usually do a light coat after towing and pull the hitch annually, remove a clean the rails and reapply slip plate.
