Like padredw says, if you are careful and pick your spots you can do fine with a 4x2. I lived three years in northern Utah. The DW had a Honda and I had a Datsun (this was pre Nissan) 4x2...got stuck once, and that was in my own driveway trying to avoid shoveling snow...again.
