The washer does go into the gray tank. People are warned to only use the washer on a sewer hookup to CYA of the washer installer.
All washers are not created equal. Some of the stackers are water hogs. We can do two loads with the LG front loader combo and not fill the gray tank.
By the way, it's possible to back up the bathroom sink and not have water in the tub. If the tank is so full it covers the vent, an air lock can form and the bathroom sink holds water, even though the tub is lower then it is.
