While I'm new to diesels, I have read a lot about the flip-of-the-switch you are talking about with diesel engines. Not so much with mileage necessarily, but guys talk about when all of a sudden the truck just seems to run better like it has finally "broken-in". Not that it was running bad previously, just that it seems to settle in and run really well.
On the mileage, I'm in the ballpark with the others - about 10ish towing, and as much as 19 empty going by the computer.
