Lets not compare apples to oranges here as the saying goes. If you are trading in a unit that has a wholesale value of say....$20,000 and retail value of $28,000 on a unit that has a MSRP of $80,000, the dealer is not going to discount the new unit down to $48,000 (-40%) and still give you $28,000 for you trade in. You will either take it in the shorts on your trade or they will show they are giving you about $30,000 for your trade and keep the price of the new unit at $80,000. You just have to get that difference down to something manageable, they are still going to make their money. And remember, you only pay sales tax on the trade difference, so sometimes if you are close on price it is better to do the deal rather than try to sale your old unit and then buy new. But to answer the original post, that salesmen was extremely rude and I think I would have gone to the management staff and let them know it.
