Some recessed lighting is nice depending on where you place them. An easier way to expand your overhead lighting would be with track lighting which would be a lot easier to install. I took a different approach to the harsh lighting of the RV type lamps and bulb and put in more table lamps.I think we have 3 table lamps in use, to me it creates a softer and brighter ambiance.
