Although I never did drag the tire and mount I always felt it was way too low and should have been located closer to the rear axle.
Here is what I did to resolve the issue after replacing my GY Marathons with GY G614's. I have a long box truck so this may not be an option on a short box truck. The rack fits in the hitch rails and is locked so cannot be removed, the tire is secured with 2 special nuts.
It serves another purpose and that is I cannot drop the trailer on my bed rails as the pin will hit the tire/rim before coming in contact with the rails. Solved two possible problems.
If I am going to be parked for any length of time I just remove the tire and rack although I seldom used this space anyway.
