So my question is can I simply rotate the whole socket 180 degrees so the cord points towards the ground no it the sky?

When you turn the socket, this would be an ideal time to check and tighten the electric connections at the socket, and to make sure it is only copper wire under the screws when you do tighten them. This will save you a lot of grief later on.
