I agree with pulling thru SF on 101, done it but you need to be patient. Going right thru town can have traffic.
Didn't say where you where staying near Yosemite.
Merced Elks Lodge has a new park. Little over an hour to Yosemite and an hour and a half to the Coast/Santa Cruz/ Monterey.
