That's exactly what I did every time I replaced backing plate assemblies. I got the shoes spread to the point where I could just get the drums installed, and then the first time we got down the mountain from the FIL's property the brakes were adjusted by the time we were at the bottom of the hill, and probably were also burnished for good braking. This is all behind us now since upgrading to discs.
