My rear AC unit did the same thing. I was thinking I would have to replace the whole thing but once I pulled the cover off and looked at the capacitors the cause was obvious. The compressor motor simply couldn't get enough 'oomph' to start. I replaced all three capacitors 'just because' and it runs like new. Total cost was about $130.

If you find oil all over it's a leak but that's much less likely than a blown cap.
