I went a couple of years ago during the 3rd week of May. Some roads were still closed but the traffic was greatly reduced as compared to June levels. I was up everyday wrll before sunrise to get location that the animals had a history of traversing. Then again in the early evening. Avoided much of the tourist traffic but I was amongst a lot of the professional photographers.
